this would seem to be the stuff that North Berwick is built of – this might explain a dearth of stone masons/carvers, though someone has built houses…

basalt is igneous rock, hard and crystalline, tuff is compacted red volcanic ash, there’s also yellow and green in the area, and The Law and The Bass (Rock – where the lighthouse is) are something really odd and unusual – ‘a volcanic plug of hard phonolitic trachyte rock’ (Wikipedia) which is metallic hard and rings when you hit it with a hammer, though why you would defeats me.
