Hillside Cottage, finished

Hillside Cottage, finished

imageHillside Cottage for Nita and Chris is finished. It’s carved on Purbeck thorn back limestone, about 400x455mm and took 47 hours to prepare the stone and carve. I actually timed this one! I didn’t time how long it took to design (seconds?!) and draw (16 hours?, much fiddling about). I owe thanks to my friends whose eye for letter spacing – Nathan, Angie, Penny, Geoff, David and skill in Photoshop fakery – David, helped me immeasurably.  The key with any carving is first to have an excellent drawing. You can’t correct errors there later when carving, leastways I don’t have that skill, yet. What I have become much better at is error management and knowing what my particular tendencies are when carving, and when sharpening my chisels. So, I tend to carve the left side of the V too shallow and the right side too vertical, so the centre line wanders to the right unless caught early on. When sharpening I under sharpen the right side of the chisel, so the blade will slope up to the right unless corrected. TMI no doubt.
